mm2 Asia Acquire Cathay Cineplexes for S$230m

By Edric  /  01 Dec 2017 (Friday)

mm2 Asia will takeover the Cathay Brand name, Logo and Cathay Cineplexes locations in Singapore.

At the press conference on Tuesday 28 November, managing director Choo Meileen of Cathay Organization confirmed the sale of the historic Cathay cinema chain. The deal worth S$230 million includes all eight-cinema locations, the Cathay brand name and logo.

The news of the aquisition was first announced on 2 November and completed last Friday 24 November. Choo who is a granddaughter of the group's co-founder has told the press that the decision to sell off the Cathay name was a "very difficult" decision. Choo hoped that a Singapore company to take over the Cathay legacy and one that had to be serious in maintaining the business. mm2 Asia "fit the bill", Choo said. "I wanted to sell it to a local company. I didn't want to sell to a foreign company like what Golden Village has done."

Business will be as normal according to mm2 Asia executive chairman Melvin Ang and that no staff members will be affected by the aquisition. There will also be no further plans to open more cinemas or close them.

Cathay will also be winding down its film distribution as part of a non-compete portion of the sale agreement.
