Adapted from Joe Kelly’s graphic novel, I Kill Giants tells the story of Barbara (Madison Wolfe). Barbara is a troubled child. She’s bullied at school and her family relations are tense due to the lack of parental figures; her sister runs the household. But she has a secret – she protects the small town she lives in by killing giants. None of the other characters understands Barbara’s obsession with Giants and thinks that she is a freak.
Madison Wolfe is a wonderful child actress. Barbara firmly believes in the Giants, which she shares with Sophia (Sydney Wade), a new child in the neighbourhood. Barbara includes Sophia in her Giant-slaying plans.
Throughout the film, we are led to believe that Giants are real. Yet, the more we get insight into Barbara’s headspace, we wonder if they are merely figments of her own imagination. Brought to us by the producers of Harry Potter, the effects are grand. The film is nothing short of exaggerated fantasticality. The soundtrack complements every scene, putting the audience on edge as they feel the same fears Barbara fears when she faces her Giants.
I Kill Giants is a refreshing take on a tricky theme. It’s about how a young girl learns to cope with the world around her: bullying, grief and coping with loss.
