Actress Shim Eun Kyung Is The First Korean To Win Best Actress At The ’43 Japanese Academy Awards’

In Japan, the ‘Japanese Academy Awards’ is equivalent to the ‘Oscars’ in the United States. To win ‘Best Lead Actress’ award is no small feat, especially when you are a foreigner competing for it. As the only foreigner nominated alongside four other Japanese actresses, Shim Eun Kyung did not expect to win for her role in her 2019 film, “The Journalist”.

With her unexpected win, Shim Eun Kyung gave her unprepared speech in tears:

"I'm sorry. I was not able to prepare a speech because I had no expectations. Thank you to everyone who watched 'The Journalist'. It was an honour to work with the cast."

On a side note, “The Journalist” also won ‘Best Picture’ that night. Lead actor Matsuzaka Tori was also selected as a winner of the 'Top Lead Actor' award.
