Other winners including Awkwafina, Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix, Taron Egerton, Phoebe-Waller Bridge, Brad Pitt, Olivia Coleman, Laura Dern and Michelle Williams took home acting awards at the star-studded ceremony. Full list of winners below!

The Golden Globes has always been seen as one of the prestigious award ceremonies in Hollywood and often giving us a clue as to who could possibly take home an Oscar, usually held a few months thereafter.  The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards was hosted by Ricky Gervais who gave a no-holds-barred opening monologue that roasted practically all the big names in Hollywood,  such as Leonardo DiCaprio, James Corden, Martin Scorsese, and even a jab at Dame Judy Dench for her role in CATS.

Rapper-turned-actress, Awkwafina, walked home with the ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy’ for her performance in ‘The Farewell’. She has made history by being the first Asian-American to win this award.

Another Asian win on the evening was the Korean film, ‘Parasite’, directed by Bong Joon Ho who won the ‘Best Foreign Language film’. His film has been receiving raving reviews from critics and fans alike, and it’s no wonder the film also won the ‘Palme d’Or’ at the Cannes film festival last year.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ earned three prizes, including awards for Best Film, Best Screenplay and for Brad Pitt’s supporting role as a washed-up stunt man in the Quentin Tarantino-directed film.

Sam Mendes’ 1917, which opens InCinemas this Thursday, is a war epic that unspools in a single shot, beat out favourites such as Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ (streaming on Netflix), Todd Phillip’s Joker, Noah Baumbach’s ‘Marriage Story’ and ‘The Two Popes’ - both also currently streaming on Netflix - to win the 'Best Motion Picture - Drama' award for the evening. Mendes also won the 'Best Director' for his vision of the film.

Renee Zellweger’s transformative performance as Judy Garland in ‘Judy’ won her the Best Actress in a Drama. You’ll be able to catch her award-winning performance when the movie opens InCinemas 9 January. Joaquin Phoenix’s Best Actor win wasn’t quite a shocker for his take on the DC villain in ‘Joker’ was one of the best iterations in our opinion.

On the television side, HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ and ‘Succession’ won two awards each including Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television and Best Television Series – Drama respectively.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge added 2 Globes to her already-full trophy shelf for ‘Best Comedy’ as well as ‘Best Actress in a Comedy’. She thanked Barack Obama for putting ‘Fleabag’ on his 2019 list and for those who have watched the first season of her show would understand this gag: “As some of you may know, he's always been on mine," Waller-Bridge said.
