The OG Ghostbusters gang is back in Jason Reitman helmed sequel!

By Rachelle  /  12 Dec 2019 (Thursday)

Hollywood has decided to reboot Ivan Reitman's beloved Ghostbusters (1984) franchise for the second time only now, they've recruited his son Jason Reitman to sit in the director's chair.

The junior Reitman's spin on the classic, phantom-fighting franchise is a direct sequel to his father’s 1984 original and 1989 sequel “Ghostbusters II.”

Ghosbusters: Afterlife centers on a family, played by Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard, who move to a small town and discover its hidden secrets. Whatever, probably ghostly, discoveries the family makes lead them directly to some old recognizable artifacts of the original Ghostbusters, and apparently the original busters themselves.

Several of the original movie’s cast members are set to reprise their roles in this sequel including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. Paul Rudd pays a teacher who’s is hype for the original team (a “fan,” if you will). And one of the kids looks exactly like the late Harold Ramis’ Egon, so you can probably tell where this is going.

This sequel will ignore the events that took place in Paul Feig’s female-led reboot Ghostbusters (2016) which famously underperformed at the box office despite a cast including comedy favorites Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, plus Chris Hemsworth in a role that went against type.

Based on the trailer that was recently released, the film looks very different from the original two movies. In fact, there are some elements of the film that are completely opposite from the Ghostbusters formula: Kids appear to be the protagonists instead of adults, and the film takes place in a rural area rather than a major city. The film also seems like more of an adventure flick than a comedy.

Kids and adventure? I bet you immediately thought of Stranger Things or IT, (both coincidentally starring Finn Wolfhard) and I wouldn't blame you. The trailer does give off those vibes.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens in cinemas July 2020.
