Octavia Spencer will scare the daylights out of you in 'Ma' trailer

Octavia Spencer, a three-time Oscar-nominated actress, has played many different types of roles.

But she has never played a villain and has been in few lead roles - until now.

In her new movie 'Ma', Octavia Spencer plays the eponymous lead Sue Ann or Ma as she prefers to be called. A lonely woman, she invites a group of teenagers to host their party in the basement of her house. But little do they know that Ma has something evil up her sleeves and they should be very careful of her.

'Ma' is directed by Tate Taylor, who has previously worked with Spencer on the film 'The Help'. Taylor has also directed 'Get on Up', a biopic on the singer James Brown, starring Chadwick Boseman, and also 'The Girl on the Train ', starring Emily Blunt.

From the trailer, it feels that 'Ma', which is produced by horror maestro Jason Blum of Blumhouse, has that 'Get Out' vibe - a psychological horror thriller, laced with social commentary on the African-American condition, which in this case is the representation of black mammy figures.

With this film, Spencer wanted to right the wrongs she felt she had done with her stereotypical mammy role in 'The Help'.

'Ma' is expected to challenge viewers' perception of the stereotype.

'Ma' will release in cinemas on 20 June 2019.
