Minister Heng Swee Keat will grace Singapore Film Society's 60th Anniversary

By Say Peng  /  16 Oct 2018 (Tuesday)

Singapore Film Society (SFS) is pleased to announce that Singapore Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, Mr Heng Swee Keat, will grace the Singapore Film Society’s 60th Anniversary celebration in conjunction with the Singapore premiere of Sundance award-winning documentary SHIRKERS. The director Sandi Tan will also be in attendance.

As a non-profit organisation, the 60th Anniversary will be a fundraiser for the society, and the presence of Minister Heng aligns with the society’s mission and vision in the promotion and appreciation of quality films.

Kenneth Tan, Chairman of Singapore Film Society, said:

“We are thrilled and honoured that Minister Heng Swee Keat is our Guest-Of-Honour.

I vividly and fondly remember his frequent attendance at our screenings in my early years with SFS, and we were always struck by this young, friendly, unassuming film buff whom we knew simply as Swee Keat, a young public officer at that time. He always sat in the same section of the auditorium, at the back. More recently, just a few years ago, he was Guest-Of-Honour at our European Union Film Festival, and reminisced about that on stage.

Having a Cabinet Minister grace any occasion is a cause for celebration, but to all of us in SFS, this is not just a VVIP coming, but a truly special person who is part of our heritage and history.

We rejoice and welcome you back, Minister Heng!”

Vice-Chairman of Singapore Film Society, David Lee, added:

“We have also taken this special opportunity to interview our Singaporean filmmakers and luminaries from the film and arts community to produce four SFS60 videos that will be shared online leading up to our main event.

Many interesting SFS stories and anecdotes are being uncovered in this interview process, especially with our former Committee Members such as Edmund Wee (Hon. Secretary from 1976 - 1984), N. Subramaniam (Chairman 1970 - 1984) and Jasmine Ng who joined as an SFS Member together with her best friend Sandi Tan when they were still in secondary school!

These precious videos document very personal SFS stories and testimonials of people from different generations and form a part of the larger narrative about the Singapore film community. The edited interview clips will be played for the audience at Capitol Theatre during our gala event, and it will be a fitting tribute to the many passionate volunteers and people who have kept SFS going all the years to watch those interview videos together as we celebrate our milestone 60th Anniversary. ”

In line with the 60th anniversary theme, the Singapore Film Society have released interviews with Singapore’s very own filmmakers.

Filmmakers and film industry professionals such as Kirsten Tan, Boo Junfeng, Liao Jiekai, Wee Li Lin, Nicole Midori Woodford, Yee Chang Kang, Yeo Siew Hua and Lim Ting Li share about what SFS means to them.

Veteran filmmakers such as Jasmine Ng, Eric Khoo, Jack Neo, Eva Tang and Han Yew Kwang reminisce about their time with the SFS and express their thoughts on the future of the SFS beyond 60 years.

There are only 4 days left to go till the grand opening of 'Shirkers'!
