7 Movies You Should Absolutely Watch this November

By Flora  /  01 Nov 2016 (Tuesday)

We’re nearing to the end of the year, and that means we are also inching towards the ‘Oscar film buzz’ phase. This November sees a good mix of movies - from musical-comedy animation and a Lee Ang-directed war drama to Disney’s first Polynesian princess movie, and a local favourite Noose character who makes her big screen debut.

Dreamworks’ new musical comedy stars a stellar voice cast, many who are famous singers in their own rights - including Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar and Zooey Deschanel.

The smart, funny and definitely colourful comedy about the search for happiness brings two Trolls of contrasting personalities together. This hilarious film transports audiences to a magical and music-filled world populated by the Trolls.

Japanese animation ‘Your Name’ (Kimi no Na wa.) is a science fiction fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, inspired by a novel of the same name written by Shinkai that was released in June 2016.

The animated hit has conquered Japan, topping the box office charts for over six weeks. Viewed by more than 10 million people in the country, ‘Your Name’ surpassed ‘Godzilla Resurgence’ as the number one box office hit in Japan this year.

Based on the Ben Fountain novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is directed by two-time Oscar winner Lee Ang, and tells the story of the title character (played by newcomer Joe Alwyn), a U.S. soldier in Bravo company operating in Iraq. His act of heroism is captured on video, goes viral and makes him and his men a media sensation in the States.

But what makes this a must-watch is because of Lee’s filmmaking process, which he had constantly surprised us with. He shot the movie in 3-D, at 4K (four times the info on screen) and at an increased frame rate at 120. (Ed Note: 24 frames per second has long been the standard) Critics who have watched it said ‘the image is alive enough to seem real, almost’.

Receiving 7 nominations at the upcoming 53rd Golden Horse Awards including Best Director; Best Adapted Screenplay; Best Leading Actress (both female leads), Best Original Film Score, etc, Soul Mate《七月与安生》is adapted from a popular online novel by Qing Shan about the friendship between two best friends.

Director Derek Tsang will be in Singapore on 3rd November to promote the movie, as well as attend the Soul Mate Singapore Gala Premiere. Stay tuned to InCinemas for our interview with director Tsang!

Disney’s first Polynesian princess leads this family animation ‘Disney’s Moana’, about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder.

The film introduces Auli'i Cravalho as Moana and features Dwayne Johnson as Maui. The film's songs were co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Auli'I Cravalho (voice of Moana), Osnat Shurer (Producer), Roger Lee (Lighting Artist) and Griselda Sastrawinata (Visual Development Artist) will meet be coming to Singapore on 9 November to meet the fans at the Marina Bay Sands festive light-up event!
