As what Bruno Mars would sing, "I want to be a billionaire, so freaking bad..." Well, I bet you want to be that rich too, or perhaps somewhere near. The hard truth is that it isn't easy to achieve something so big, especially when you're young, like Top (Pachara Chirathivat) in this inspirational movie.
As a young teenager when he realized that trading his game weapons could earn him real hard cash, he thought he would be an instant billionaire (or at least a millionaire) with his tens and hundreds of highly sought after game add-ons and weapons. He spent on games like what boys would do and even got himself a posh car to drive to school. But things don't end there. When he really needed the money, he found himself banned from the game and decided to start on another business venture that would lead him to riches. He started from selling DVD players, then to chestnuts, and finally THEE seaweed. Yes, it is a true story of how the favourite crispy seaweed Tao Kae Noi was created.
Be prepared to sit in for quite a long time for it's a two-hour plus movie. In my opinion, I felt it was too long, many scenes could be cut, and characters like his girlfriend in my opinion was rather insignificant, appearing during one or two scenes and disappearing for a good five scenes and then coming back for a short 2-minute appearance. Yes, her character was supposed to steer the main character, but it felt like 'for the sake of adding' a character in it. Uncle of Top did a really good job, showing the loving and supporting side of how relatives will be.
What's interesting to watch is how he perseveres through the many hardships, making viewers feel for Top and wants him to succeed. As a young boy, he gave school up to prove his dream and took on the responsibility as the son to pay back the debt his father was in. After all, who doesn't like happy endings? You somehow know that the boy will succeed one day, with the faint silver lining towards the end of the show, it gives you a happy, feel good emotion for Top.
Pachara Chirathivat, the boy would shot to fame with Suckseed definitely put much more effort in making this melodramatic film, with some pretty intense scenes and his exasperation at many points in the show. I would say it is a commendable job done but sometimes it felt one-sided. It didn't quite hit the right note to bring the viewers into his world that he felt was closing on him.
I wouldn't say this movie isn't worthy of watching, but you wont be surprised having the urge of pressing the forward button during many scenes. A few comical lines from the cast from time to time but if you are thinking of something along the line of Suckseed, then this movie doesn't really fit. An inspiring movie no doubt, to spur you on to make your first billion too! |
